Mustang Fury - the best in the WestThe girls U12 Mustang Fury soccer team has achieved its quest to be recognized as the top team in the country by capturing the Far West Regional Championships in Hawaii. The Far West Regionals are made up of the 13 State Champions and three wild card teams from the Western United States.
Win in Hawaii puts local girls on top of the soccer world
The Mustang Fury opened the tournament with a convincing win over Alaska, 6-0. Chelsea Arnold, Makenna Kummer and Jamie Speros all contributed impressive goals for this first win.
They continued bracket play with a win over Oregon, 8-0. Rayan Takemoto was top scorer in this game striking two goals for the Fury, one off a nice cross by Sarah Peterson. Ashley Christensen scored on a strong drive up the middle. Kathleen Hupke, Chelsea and Jamie also contributed to the win with one goal each. Kummer toughed out the midfield backed up with flawless defense by Madison Castelein.
The Fury completed its domination of bracket play with a 5-0 win over the Washington State wildcard team for the top draw out of its bracket. Castelein powered up from the backfield for a goal from outside, and Dana Outcalt scored an exciting header off a perfect corner kick to the box from Allie Dutto. Melissa Lewis and Takemoto each contributed noteworthy goals to the effort. Erin Donnelly commanded the middle of the field with Ashley making significant defensive contributions in the backfield.
After winning its bracket, the Fury defeated the Washington State Champs, Emerald City, 4-0, in the quarter finals. Hupke and Perez each scored powerful goals capping the win along with the two goals made by Dutto. Lewis ruled the midfield alongside Peterson with some crafty steals and Jessica Gillespie's exceptional defensive plays.
The semifinals were against a tough Arizona State Champion, Sereno, and the Fury came out on top with a 1-0 win. With a stunning shot, Erin Donnelly scored the lone goal for the Fury, while goalie Zoey Bauman skillfully handled the opponent's seven shots on the Fury goal. Alyssa Herwatt reigned over the middle with Outcalt playing outstanding defense.
In the championship game the Fury met its old rival from So Cal, West Coast FC. The Fury jumped out 2-0 in the first half with two dazzling goals by Dutto, one off a textbook feed from Perez. Midfielders Gillespie and Herwatt dominated the middle of the field winning every ball. WCFC had six shots on goal with some impressive saves by keeper Bauman before they scored with 10 minutes to go in the second half (the first goal the Fury had allowed since before the NorCal State Cup). The Fury regained control as every girl on the team stepped up to contribute to the 2-1 victory for the Regional Championship.
The Fury was also presented with the Fair Play Award at the tournament, which recognizes one team in each age group for its spirit of fair play and outstanding sportsmanship.
The team is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by both Got Soccer and National Soccer Ranking.
