Kids help wounded Oakland boy

Fifth-graders from St. Isidore School sold water, cookies and candy outside the school gym during CYO games to help raise money for Christopher Rodriguez, the fifth-grader who was shot recently while taking a piano lesson in Oakland and paralyzed. They raised $701.91 and will continue their efforts this Sunday. The boys involved were Blake Ogburn, Jack Markey, Quinn Mortensen, Matt Rebone, Matt Eckermann, Julian Corpus, Jason Hare, Wade Ogburn, Chelsea Vick and Ashley Cleveland. Donations can be made to Wells Fargo Bank, Christopher G. Rodriguez Trust Account No. 7013202606

Young 'honor' musicians scatter melodies

Music students from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District are performing with honor bands in concerts after having been nominated by their teachers and then auditioning.

The Contra Costa County Honor Band will host a concert at the San Ramon Valley High School Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2. The event will feature student musicians Rachel Sweet, Amanda Chen, Michael Chen, Jennifer Larsen, Corrine Cooper and Gabe Corpus from Monte Vista High School; and Suzanne Batiste, Peter Cheng, Cassie Carsten, Ricky Schultz, Eric Liao, Cameron Ulmer, Brian Wells, Taylor Stanton, Christian Ulmer, Mike Zylberman, Matthew Huff, Jared Keil, Grant Lipson, Ethan Thornburg and Thomas Rugg from San Ramon Valley High School.

The California Band Directors Association All-State Junior High and High School Bands will perform in Fresno on Feb. 23 and will feature Gordon Brown and Rachel Smith from Charlotte Wood Middle School; Erin Hsi from Diablo Vista Middle School; and Jared Keil, Peter Cheng and Grant Lipson from San Ramon Valley High School.

The California Music Education Association State Festival and Honor Orchestra will be represented by Chris Hambelton, Suzanne Batiste and Ricky Schultz from San Ramon Valley High School in Sacramento on March 16.

Past performances include the American Choral Director's Association Coastal Division Honor Choir performed at Stanford University on Nov. 17 and featured San Ramon Valley students Eric Tuan, Derek Czajka, Chelsea Broome, Marielle Sheppel, Rosie Bochenek and Ariana Viera.

The California Music Education Association Bay Section Conference held Jan. 11-12 showcased students in the Festival Band, including Nicole Eklund and Rachel Smith from Charlotte Middle School; and Kelly Kimball, Andrew Li and Heidi Park from Diablo Vista Middle School.

The Northern California Band Association All-Northern Junior High and High School Honor Bands performed in Stockton on Jan. 20 with Gordon Brown, Katie Chase, Nickole Eklund, KC Faulkner, Jeff Jordan and Rachel Smith from Charlotte Middle School.
