And so it starts! The Piepho campaign, as noted on www.marynejedlypiepho.com, is starting the flow of letters to the editor as disquised advertising for a deeply troubled re-election campaign. With commercial polling services illustrating an approval rating below 28% and too few campaign volunteers, the tactic is to use LTTE submissions to create the appearance of support.
Communities and neighborhoods throughout District 3 are now linked by e-chains and >60,000 residents are communicating on the issues of this campaign and the goals of government after November 2008. Certainly, many things done through CCC-BOS power must be rectified and new consensus with communities and neighborhoods must be the role of county government going forward.
The emotional appeal of an LTTE campaign should not replace the reality of abuses over the past three years or should it replace discussions of the issues facing Contra Costa County going forward.

Karl Rove is alive and well in the Piepho Campaign.
A new Chief of Staff and Communications Consultant will not change that fact. Lisa's column this AM in the Times noted that nasty politics is occurring and many of us have already been appalled by the polling tactics.
In the end, there will be no way to put "lipstick" of such a campaign. When faced with the issues of distain for neighborhoods and abuse of communities, Piepho's campaign only has the emotions of a select few to disquise her failures.

The previous message was received as part of a personal response from Hal on the nature of the campaign for District 3 Supervisor. In that detailed message Hal provided review of the way politics in Contra Costa Costa County was aggregating to protect the current supervisors. The points made dealt with the actions of campaign supporters, especially developers, to create a negative view of Guy Houston with voters throughout District 3.
Thus, Karl Rove techniques of campaigning have been brought to the Piepho campaign to defeat Guy Houston who is currently preferred 2 to 1 throughout District 3. The goal of Piepho Campaign sponsors, illustrated via research, is to protect the expansion of land use in District 3 and to further protect control of the board of supervisors by institutions and developers.
AS the campaign moves forward, there is ample evidence that District 2, 3 and 5 will be a single campaign to stay in office and avoid the exceptional political influence of Guy Houston and potential successful replacement of District 2 and 5 supervisors. Guy's impact via his State-level connections could create a board of supervisors far more committed to consensus with communities and neighborhoods and restrict the current influence of financial institutions and developers in board decisions.
Institutions and developer, via research discovery, do not want Guy's influence is major land use considerations such as the Concord Naval Weapons Station. I suggest that Contra Costans need to make that land use an issue of all campaigns including the planned recalls of District 1 and 4.
Polling activities, conducted by the conservative minority of Republicans in Contra Costa County, are trying to "Swift Boat" Guy Houston. Be very thorough in your review of such polling and careful in what you believe.
