Litter in the Lunardi's Parking Lot Solution
Original post made by JRM on Jul 23, 2013
Mr. Gillette, is this something the town can explore?
Thanks to all who pick up after their dogs by the way, there has been a MAJOR improvement over the last 10 years in that area. The bags along the trail have been a great solution.

If the litter is coming from Lunardi's and other food purveyors maybe they should add a few more cans on their property site too. I am all for a couple of more cans on the parking lot side of Lunardi's. I have seen broken beer bottles in the parking lot on mornings I walk too and food packages from Buger King. What happened to street cleaning crews? Town has enough staff to take care of this. But it gets down to the people and residents. If they don't care enough to throw away cups/paper, etc. then all the garbage cans will not make them stop littering. Dog owners for the most part are good at this cause there are usually so many people around watching that they can't help but pick up their dogs poop.

If the litter is more of a problem on Lunardi's main lot (north side of store, facing the Railroad Museum), compared to the smaller lot on the south side, then it may have something to do with the farmer's market. Not even "intentional" trash, perhaps, but just the by-product of holding that sort of event.
I haven't tried to pay attention to the availability of trash cans at/during the farmer's market, but it may be that more trash cans are needed. But this wouldn't really be Lunardi's responsibility....
Lunardi's has some benches set up adjacent to the Iron Horse trail, which is nice of them to provide. And I think that there is at least one trash can by these benches. This area has seemed reasonably neat when I've stopped there during bike rides.

I walk through that lot 3 mornings a week. Much of the litter looks like it comes out of people's cars. Occasionally someone has emptied a car ash tray on the ground or there's other non-food related garbage.
I miss Andronico's--they did a great job of making sure the lot was cleaned of trash.
Studies have been done that show that if there is trash already there, people are more likely to dump their own trash. If it's clean, people are less likely.
