Danville council may get a vacancy

With the election of Mayor Candace Andersen to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors last week, the possibility has arisen that Andersen could be appointed to fill the late Supervisor Gayle Uilkema's term prior to January 2013. Uilkema died May 19 of ovarian cancer.

The law regarding appointments was enacted to prevent a town council from "packing" the council with non-elected members. However, this is a special case since Karen and Robert were unopposed, they could reasonably be considered "elected" to the council for all practical purposes.
