San Ramon Valley schools gear up for the future
Schools & Kids, posted by Editor, Danville Weekly Online, on Oct 3, 2010 at 3:13 pm

It would be understandable if the mind went immediately to technology when considering the future of schools in the 21st century, especially given the technology that's come about in the last 25 years or so: Cell phones, personal computers and even fax machines are all relatively recent developments.

This young man knocked on my door today and introduced himself as a candidate for the San Ramon Valley School Board. We're new to the area but he really seemed to have a passion for maintaining the spirit of competitive education in the valley. He's probably going to get both my husbands and my vote. Why is it I see signs with three names on it for the three positions available? Is there some "all for one, one for all" thing I'm missing out on? I've met John Lane for just a few minutes and I can tell he'd be a good director... young and virtuous. Who are the three musketeers or are they the three stooges and do we have to vote for all three if it turns out we only like one?

Dear Dolores,

The concept of a slate of three candidates for the SRVUSD Board started in the late 1990's when Joan Buchanan campaigned with two other candidates on a shared-cost basis. It should be understood that all four current candidates are individually running for three positions on the SRVUSD Board. No combined campaign or slate of three candidates changes the voters' right to choose any three of the four candidates on their individual merits.

I will be supporting John Lane and Rachel Hurd with my votes. I have not yet determined my vote for a third candidate. We should all realize that we have four earnest candidates and I suggest voters review the fiscal planning experience and education of all candidates as primary requirement for our best use of SRVUSD funds going forward.
