On Labor Day, at around 2:00 PM, I was having my daily coffee on the bench outside Starbucks on Hearts, at cross section of Prospects. It was a beautiful day, a bit windy. Suddenly, I heard a cracking noise and shouted at the people on the next bench to watch out. Before I could move a big branch came down and scratches me on my face and legs. At first, I moved the big branch to the side to clear the sidewalk. I called the Danville police, since I noticed another bigger branch is broken and will come down any minute. Danville police came and looked at the tree and called the town people to come and take care of the tree. Meanwhile, people kept passing under the tree and kept wanting to sit on the the benches. I didn’t trust the bigger branch, because it was just resting on the other tree in front and could come down at any moment. Then, I pulled the first branch and placed it on the walkway, blocking the path for people not to walk under the tree and warned the people that attempted to use the bench. I didn’t know how long it was going to take for town people to show up, and did not want to sit there warning people all day. Then, I told a lady whom I had warned earlier, and was sitting with her young daughter close by watching the event, that I was going to untangle the branch from the other tree, so that it would fall intentionally rather than accidentally, falling on someone causing damage. I kind of guessed which direction the branch was going to fall. I stayed clear the path and pulled the breanch off its resting place and it came down tumbling. Later on, the town people came and cut and removed the fallen branches, and indicated they were going to further investigate the stability of the rest of the tree. Fortunately, everything ended up peacefully, with only a few scratches on my leg. Thanks to the lady with the child who gave me encouragement not to leave and to make sure the situation is safe and secure.
