Danville Police Department is offering several tips to residents to help keep the holiday a safe one for the younger ghouls and goblins. Some tips include: younger children should always be accompanied by an adult; older children should travel in groups, following an established route in a familiar area and establish a return time for older children by making sure they have a watch or cell phone with them; tell your children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything. Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect; walk on the sidewalk and carry flashlights; visit homes that are well-lit and remain on the porch for your candy, as there is no reason to go inside a home; and lastly, homeowners should make sure that the front yard is clear of hazards, such as toys, hoses, or decorations that might cause someone to trip. When is Nevada Day? Nevada became a state (admitted to the Union) October 31, 1864, so Nevada Day is October 31st of each year.
For most of us that are Step-Irish, this is Celtic New Years as was part of the ancient Irish celebration of the end of summer as the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)", derived from the Old Irish Samuin meaning "summer's end". It was a time for stock-taking and preparation for the cold winter months ahead. There was also a sense that this was the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen.
