AIA's special membership offer
Around Town, posted by [special offer], a resident of the Alamo neighborhood, on Oct 14, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Dear Editor,

This message below was received this morning extending free membership in the AIA to Alamo region residents. According to the AIA by-laws, membership is open to all that are interested in Alamo. Your Alamo region readers can refer to www.alamoca.org to learn more about the AIA and to access a membership form.

Neighbors—

The Alamo Improvement Association is interested in getting more Alamo residents involved so as to broaden our support base and improve our leverage with the County Government. Accordingly, the AIA is offering free memberships for the rest of this year to any Alamo resident who is not currently enrolled. This membership will be in effect through June of next year.

An AIA membership application is attached to this message, and I invite you all to take advantage of this offer. It will get you on the AIA distribution list and give you a way to keep up with ongoing issues that this organization is working on behalf of your community.

Dear Editor,

Alamo region neighborhoods have directly responded to this TRIAL offer with two general comments:

#1 Alamo Improvement Association has potential within its current and planned committees to be the prominant community voice for Alamo's region and community. Neighbors are very willing to be paid members of the AIA when committees are functional and neighborhoods' representatives are enrolled in committees' activities.

#2 Neighbors realize that all residents are already members of the AIA via direct membership or via neighborhood, business district and community group representatives that are members of the AIA.

The AIA is encouraged to complete organization of public safety and preparedness, parks and environment, community affairs and economic development committees with opportunity for neighbors to join such committees as part of a stronger voice for the Alamo region.

You should probably work on getting comfortable with the fact that the AIA is not a governing agency and never will meet CA gov. code as "local government".

It is a membership club and has no "additional leverage" with County government, nor should it. With a membership of about 11 percent it doesn't come close to speaking for the majority of Alamo residents. You would need about another 40 percent added to the membership to cross that threshold. Doesn't look like they will get even close, even with free memberships.

The minority should always have a voice, just not "additional leverage".
