The demise of the Danville Times
Around Town, posted by Hal Bailey, a resident of another community, on Mar 9, 2008 at 9:33 am

Dear Neighbors,

Contra Costa Times has discontinued The Danville Times weekly newspaper without ever giving that paper the ability to report news. Much like Alamo Today, The Danville Times reported cultural events and attitudes with little scope of reporting or engagement of the areas it served. Now, the San Ramon Valley Times remains as a redundancy of Contra Costa Times reporting and a superficial provider of reporting on issues, events and actions in our region.

Such weekly newspapers have potential to be the in-depth news providers that fully explain the daily "people and event" stories. There are hints of such efforts in The Danville Weekly and Walnut Creek Journal but more could be done to provide the depth of reporting and editorial review of issues.

This is a very dangerous time to lose any media voice. It is far more dangerous if we allow our news media to be absent of depth. WE have a voice that will retain our various newspapers and an obligation to contribute to reporting that serves us.

The Danville Times seemed to report on everything and anything besides the Danville area. It just seemed like another featured part of the paper, usually have a little or nothing to do with the area. That's why I love The Danville Weekly. Covering events from everywhere within this area! Keep up the good work, Danville Weekly!!
