In a special ceremony on Wednesday, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History dedicated a larger than life-sized bust of Kenneth Behring by well-known sculpter Marc Mellon that will sit on the museum's second floor, just off the National Mall entrance. Behring, who created the Wheelchair Foundation and developed Blackhawk, has donated $100 million to the Smithsonian over several years.

Behring is right -- History is woefully short in school curriculum, and if it is taught, my experience is that many of today's teachers push their personal agendas or causes, and don't address American history on a larger scale. Kids told me that their teacher focused their ENTIRE World War II section on the holocaust. Shameful. While a part of the WWII story, it wasn't the whole story of the 7-year world conflict. Many teachers today teach about their own "causes" and revisionism, and negate our history on a larger scale. I asked 5 students simple questions like when was World War II fought, what was Gettysburg? D-Day? Valley Forge? The Alamo? No one got it right. But they said they all were drilled pretty thoroughly about the underground railroad. Shameful. Again, part of the story, but not the whole story, not by a longshot. I applaud Ken Behring for stepping up to help the situation.

Blessings to you, Ken, and to your entire family. It is wonderful that you all support the historical aspects of the United States of America, and I am proud that you are in our very own community! I'm looking forward to the opening of our renovated Veterans Memorial Building and seeing the new Library within its walls too. Ken, thank you for everything you do to help our community and our great Nation - this honor you received is well-deserved!
