Just the week before I was in NYC at Battery Park. Looks like the master of hide-and-go-seek has been found. Appears to me that Osama bin Laden has outlived his usefulness to the United States, otherwise he would have been dead years ago. Obama appears to shoring up his bid for second term, first the mysterious long-form birth certificate is revealed to the public, now Osama bin Laden is dead.
Sorry, I am just a bit cynical.
Bush could only talk the talk (for 8 years).
Obama actually walked the walk.
Yeah, and it's a good thing that he finally revealed that long form birth certificate! Not like the reason he had to do it was because of pathetic, simpering morons who had no justification for their demands! And now that the war on terror is officially over, I can't wait to use my new found freedom to leave my house to investigate this so called "President" of ours even further!
Obama won the lottery on this one being the sitting President, and yet we listen to his mouthing about how he gave the go ahead on the operation. It's like a multi-million dollar lottery winner claiming they earned the freakin' money when all they did was buy a ticket at the 7/11.
Yeah, GG, I guess you are right. Bush sure showed us how easy it was to capture bin Laden. Because Bus promised to "hunt him down, smoke him out."
Oh wait, it must have been that 8 years just wasn't long enough to do the job.
It couldn't have been that Bush wasn't trying hard enough, or just didn't care, or was just plain inept.
Osama died as a result of a political decision and was buried at sea so nothing more political could be made of his death. Osama survived this long because his death was opposite to the political purposes of the Bush Administration who needed Osama to continue the ignorant fear among USAmerican voters that allowed violence in Iraq, Afghanistan and other global locations.
I read the AP, Reuters and Star feeds yesterday and appreciated the depth of analysis. We must trust global reporting for the details of the realities of Osama's death because USAmericans do not want to hear/read such reality that does not fit their desired ignorance. No matter USAmericans' education and experience, the choice of ignorance fits their needs and allows a portion of our population to imagine their global importance. It is only imagination.
I read the first part of the question that asked "Where were you when you first learned about the 9/11 attacks" and then read the responses. It was interesting that respondents focused on the latter half of the question...in order to hail or harass the our country's leadership--I presume based on their political views. Regardless, I will respond to the first part. I was up very early making breakfast for our young daughters when my husband called and told me to turn on the television. He said to sit down and watch the news channel, and call him if I needed to talk. I had many family members living in NYC at the time.
Regarding the 2nd half of the question, I guess I don't celebrate death in any form. And I do not think we are any safer because this man is dead.
I'll believe he's dead when I see his death certificate.
Yesterday was remarkable for the absence of our local Tea Party "patriots" who turn out to shout down universal medical care and wave flags but are no where to be seen when the US captures and kills the murderer Bin Laden. I am proud of our President, government and military forces for the persistence, planning and guts to accomplish this mission.
Hilarious and ironic that Obama and his minions used information from the Bush admin ie waterboarding and Guantanimo to get the info to get Osama. Also all funds to Pakistan need to be cut off as they were well aware of his location for years.
Not surprising the affirmative action prez is taking full credit for others work---that's all he knows what to do----"I wasn't a great student--" yet got into Columbia and Harvard!?! Lol!!!
Jeff, Rumsfeld went on record to say that water boarding was not used to get the name of the Bin Laden's courier. It took years to identify who that individual is. Also Obama did give credit to the previous administration. Pay attention to the facts and try to overcome your prejudicial views.
My wife, Susan, and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary in Italy during the 9/11 attacks. We are once again in Italy when we heard the news of bin laden's death.
I agree with Jeff---Obama was busy taking as much credit as he could. Reports ARE that info leading to the courier WERE in fact gotten originally by waterboarding. Obama worshippers need to get off the koolaid.
This exchange is becoming ladened with false information generated from BLOG sources that cannot pass fact-checking by global news services. AP/API, Reuters and more have international sources that clarify the information sequence, over the past decade, fully accredited by Barack Obama that led to the result of finding Osama. It is recommended that your readers respect global news services and rely on the in-depth, balanced reporting rather than repeat the prejudice of various slanted BLOGS.
Reality remains: Osama died as a result of a political decision and was buried at sea so nothing more political could be made of his death. Osama survived this long because his death was opposite to the political purposes of the Bush Administration who needed Osama to continue the ignorant fear among USAmerican voters that allowed violence in Iraq, Afghanistan and other global locations.
Mike: Leon Panetta told Brian Williams on NBC today that water boarding under the Bush administration did contribute to obtaining information that led to the capture of Bin Laden.
American - You are incorrect. Interrogation of detainees provided some of the information that ultimately led to bin Laden, but not the interrogation methods that constituted torture (like waterboarding). Sadists like Cheney can claim no credit in the elimination of bin Laden. Cheney and Bush were more interested in chasing bogus WMDs (and oil).
However, if it had been Bush who had directed the elimination of bin Laden, you can bet that the right wing commentators would be clamoring for Bush's likeness to be carved on Mt. Rushmore. Because for them, it not about security and it's not about real patriotism; it's just about politics and power - nothing more.
Inman: Just to be clear, I am not taking a position on whether water boarding is legal, ethical, or appropriate in this situation. I am just noting what I saw on the NBC Brian Williams interview yesterday of Leon Panetta. Mr. Panetta did clearly state that water boarding under the Bush administration did contribute to obtaining information that led to the capture of Bin Laden.
Apparently, waterboarding contributed misleading information that actually hindered the path to bin Laden (e.g., Khalid Sheik Mohammed's statement that the messenger was not an important link to bin Laden}.
