'Peace Through Art and Writing Challenge' contest announced
Schools & Kids, posted by Editor, Danville Weekly Online, on Jan 27, 2011 at 6:52 am

Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center presents the 14th annual "Peace through Art and Writing Challenge." The contest is open to high school and middle school students in Contra Costa County. The students are invited to enter any of three categories: Essay, Creative Writing, or Art in any medium. The pieces should be based on the following: "Often we create divisions between ourselves and others because of race, religion, politics, sexual orientation or even minor things such as dress or mannerisms. Have you or someone you know ever been subject to verbal abuse or bullying as a result of these or any other differences? How did you/they handle the situation? What steps can we take to create an atmosphere of tolerance and acceptance of all people?" Deadline is March 7 and art should be sent or delivered to the Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center which is located at 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek; or e-mailed to [Web Link WritingContest@mtdpc.org].

This looks like a worthwhile training exercise in real-life skills. Forethought often improves someone's response to a stressful situation, like bullying. Kudos to the Peace Center for recognizing that their mission begins early and at-home!

Here's hoping for lots of Danville kids' participation! Hope the DX will make a fuss over the winners.
