Weather closes Hap Magee Canine Corral
Sports, posted by Editor, Danville Weekly Online, on Nov 22, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Canines used to leash-free romps at the Canine Corral at Hap Magee Ranch Park will have to travel a little further. Each year Danville closes the dog park for routine maintenance, which this year begins Dec. 6. The dog park was already closed this weekend due to the heavy rains.

Dear Dolores,

As I reviewed the boundaries today within Hap Magee Ranch Park, the dog play area is in Alamo. I fully understand that Danville runs this park and all its areas. BUT may we wonder why?

Beyond government designations, why does it make sense that Danville operate in Alamo? Wasn't that the core issue with the SRV YMCA property? This result is very positive to dog owners but leaves questions about the precedents that such operations create.

Dear Dolores,

I took my walk yesterday down the Iron Horse Trail to Camille and across into Hap Magee. The very cold air likely kept the park empty except for one fellow walker. Gone were the mother's group and their children's play group, dogs and owners playing in the corral, and various groups gathered on the large summer lawn.

It was a peaceful loop around the park with a stop to watch the creek fall over its barrier. The very simple, quiet natural setting was very welcoming.

Thank you to all those that personally keep Hap Magee such a place.

Some answers to the above. The Town of Danville and the CC Board of Supervisors have an agreement to run the joint park which has approximately half in Alamo and half its area in Danville. Two people from each area are on the committee with a fifth at large member which going back 20+ years has always come from Danville. They advise their respective leaders; however, the Danville members being local are much more in contact with their leaders than Alamo who advises the CC Board of Supervisors.

The staff of Danville runs the day to day operations and charges Alamo for 1/2 of all improvements and maintenance, etc. They also run the committee. Going back at least ten to fifteen years there have been questions as to whether or not this truly benefits Alamo or is it just a way for Danville to do what it wants and get half paid for by the citizens of Alamo.
