Danville resident Evan Levy was one of the two semifinalists with his Southwestern Potato Kugel at the Western finals of the Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off in San Francisco yesterday, competing against nine others. He gets a trip to NYC and a chance to compete in the finals for $25,000 worth of prizes.

I had the pleasure to meet Evan, at Jewish Summer Camp, when we were just kids, and have been lifelong friends ever since. It doesn't surprise me that he has won this contest...Evan has always had discriminating tastes (even as kids, he knew the good from the bad food while dining at our cafeteria-style-Camp Swig meals)! Seriously, Evan has always been extremely creative in the kitchen and is truly a master at everything from cooking to entertaining; with his natural talents and energy, Evan could successfully run an entire catering/party industry (while keeping the day job)! Whenever I've had the fortune, to eat meals he's prepared, they've always tasted delicious. Though I'm sure he uses the best ingredients, I think Evan's secret recipe, to all he creates, is his 'flare for life,' his 'good humor' and mostly his 'genuine interest' in people he is cooking/creating something for...Evan truly puts his 'heart and soul' into everything he does, his chief concern for always making others happy (maybe the name of Evan's future restaurant chain..."Chef Evan's Heart & Soul Food"?!). I'm so proud to know Evan Levy and wish to congratulate him and the entire Levy Family upon this grand accomplishment! Jennifer B. Handler, San Diego, CA
