Ms. Piepho, why should we save the Delta?

Dear Emily,

It might be appropriate to interview Supervisor Piepho and ask a question that many professionals and scientists cannot fully answer, “Why should the California Delta be conserved and isn’t there a better planned use for this land and waterways?” During the past 20 years many publications have pointed to the negatives of the Delta as it is and its better use as developed land for agriculture, water storage, and overall flood control.

Scientists seem to agree that conserving the Delta in its current status or as it was a hundred years ago is a poor use of land and water resources. Thus, the public needs a qualified professional and scientific presentation of the current and potential value of the Delta beyond the politics of environmental considerations. What economic and environmental benefit could be achieved by development of the Delta beyond being simply a flood zone?

Journalism, please,

Hal/CDSI Research Fellowship
