Starting new traditions
Schools & Kids, posted by Editor, Danville Weekly Online, on Jun 9, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Walking into their brand new school in 2008, students at Dougherty Valley High School realized they'd be creating a legacy. Two years later, they've set some things in motion, and hope their "new traditions" will remain. Beyond high academic scores, the seniors at DVHS had a unique set of opportunities and challenges.

Dear Glenn,

Thank you for your nice article on Dougherty Valley High School. Just wanted to bring to your attention that that your demographic information did not add up. According to the Dept. of Education here is the breakdown for Dougherty Valley High School:

44% Asian

30% White

08% Hispanic/Latino

06% Filipino

05% Black

05% Two or more races

02% Other

As you will note Asians represent nearly 50% of the student population at Dougherty Valley High School. The Asian STAR test results are also nearly 75 points higher than that of the white population, 947 versus 875. If it were not for the Asian stuedent population, Dougherty Valley High School would be rather ordinary.

don't start insinuating anything about race. everyone comes together at that school and gets along just fine. you don't need to say something that insensitive about the pleasant environment we have right here in dougherty valley. asian or not, every high school is diverse in some way, and you don't need to share such narrow-minded stereotypical and racist views. if you don't want to point out the positives overall, then leave it out. you can make your case somewhere else where that is tolerated, but I resent that sir.
