Mei created a project to unravel a protein that helps fight cancer, and Li worked on how a protein could diagnose cancer.
"It's a first step toward the Nobel Prize," Mei said.
Li said he enjoyed the experience.
"It's fun designing new things," said Li. "It was pretty interesting and engaging."
The students will now advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May in Albuquerque. The contest features more than 1,000 entries with a grand prize of $50,000 for a college scholarship.
