 | The recently renovated Veterans Memorial Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its various sustainable features. The building received a silver certification for implementing "practical and measureable solutions for water savings, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality."
The Veterans Memorial Building reopened in April 2012 after two years of reconstruction to update facilities and improve accessibility. A strong component of the project design was the incorporation of sustainable eco-friendly practices, according to town officials.
Some of the green improvements include:
* 88 percent of construction waste diverted from the landfill
* Use of recycled construction material, such as recycled glass countertops
* Installation of dual flush toilets and low flow fixtures
* Daylight and occupancy lighting sensors minimize electricity demand
* Retention basins and filters collect storm water runoff
* Roof-mounted solar panels that provide 10,223 kilowatt hours of electricity per year
"This is a great achievement for the town and the Veterans Memorial Building," said Town Manager Joe Calabrigo. "The silver rating is the result of a great deal of planning and effort on the part of the town and its partners on this project."
The Veterans Memorial Building houses local veterans' organizations, senior activities and Danville recreational programs. It is located at 400 Hartz Avenue. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
