Once the table has been cleared, the turkey wrapped for leftovers and Black Friday shopping has died down, head to downtown Danville and celebrate a season of community spirit on Small Business Saturday.

Sponsored by the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce and Discover Danville Association, the fifth annual Spirit of Danville holiday dining and shopping extravaganza brings together local businesses and residents in a community event designed to boost the local economy. Held from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. throughout the town on Nov. 24, Spirit of Danville aims to be the perfect place to find gifts (for others and yourself) and enjoy a satisfying meal out on the town.

"In order to keep this small town atmosphere we have a responsibility to support our local merchants when they need it most -- during the holidays," wrote Chamber CEO Shelby McNamara. "Every time you make a purchase in Danville the taxes from that purchase go toward bolstering our local infrastructure….You can feel confident that even the smallest purchases help keep our businesses thriving, our property values healthy and our own slice of the economy going strong."

Special events and Spirit discounts will be offered at various locations in Danville and a free trolley will shuttle shoppers to downtown Danville, the Livery and Rose Garden shops between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Several local nonprofit organizations and charities will also participate in the Spirit of Danville event. Blue Star Moms, Lazarex Cancer Foundation, Hospice of the East Bay, San Ramon Valley Education Foundation and Discover Danville Association will host booths with a commemorative ornament available for a donation.

"As a small business owner and a specialty retailer, the September through December window justifies my being able to serve the public and keep the doors open January through August," said Marcia Harmon, owner of Cottage Jewel and president of Discover Danville Association.

Spirit of Danville isn't just for those old enough to own a credit card. While the grownups shop, children ages 3-11 can register for a kid's holiday fun event at the community center from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Trained town staff will help each child make a gift and card, enjoy a light snack and watch a movie. Children must be fully potty-trained to attend and registration is required. Down the street, Santa Claus will be at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to visit with children and read wish lists.
