| Alamo resident Zachary Scherman traveled to Nettuno, Italy on Aug. 7 to participate in the World Baseball Classic Mundial Hit 2012. The 14-year-old represented the USA under-15 team, which had representatives from all over the country; teams in the tournament were from various parts of Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Czech Republic and China.
The USA team won the title with seven wins after beating southern Italy in the championship game 5-12 on Aug. 12. Zach went 7-17 with a .412 Batting average including 9 RBI's; from the pitcher's mound Zach threw in three games with one win and two saves. He only gave up one hit in the three games, had an ERA of .000 and a WHIP of 0.86.
A freshman at De La Salle, the trip was a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for Zach, who was recently selected one of the "Select 60" of Northern California chosen by "Got em Baseball" out of Sacramento. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
