Car runs over Danville street sleepers

| Two teenage boys who claimed they fell asleep stargazing in the street were run over around 3:30 this morning on Ashland Court in Danville by a woman delivering the San Francisco Chronicle.
The woman said she did not see the boys in the street, said Sgt. Philip Wisotsky of the Danville police.
Making what Wisotsky called a "bizarre accident" even odder, the woman stopped the car after hitting the 15-year-old boys, trapping them under the Nissan Sentra.
"As she was exiting the roadway she felt the car drive over something," he said. "So she stopped the car immediately, got out and saw the two boys underneath."
The woman called 911. Firefighters from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District arrived on the scene, lifted the car and got the boys out, Wisotsky said.
They were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and treated for minor to moderate injuries. One boy suffered a damaged spleen, punctured lung and burns on his back.
At the hospital the boys told Danville police's traffic officer, Jason Hoschouer, what had happened.
"The kids told the officer that they were stargazing and they fell asleep in the street," said the sergeant. They were sleeping face down, on the east side of the cul de sac.
The woman is not being charged at this time; the investigation is still ongoing, Wisotsky said.

Posted by father of 14 year old SRVHS girl, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Jun 14, 2008 at 1:11 pm I understand it is common for teenagers to sneak out at night and hang out together. Sooner or later something like this will happen. Two 15 year old boys were nearly killed when they were run over by a car while sleeping in a street at 3:30 in the morning.
What can we do to keep these kids safe and inside at night? My daughter seems to thing that if their not doing something against the law it's no big deal.

Posted by Dee, a resident of the San Ramon neighborhood, on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:30 pm I can see sleeping outside - especially in the heat - but in the street? Can't imagine. Maybe the last person was right, it was the forbiddenness that appealed to them. Poor Chronicle delivery person! It sounds kind of unfair that police are saying she may be to blame. I know we are supposed to always watch for cars, bikes, children, etc., but people sleeping on the street?

Posted by A step mother of 2 young adults and 2 under 8, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Jun 16, 2008 at 9:58 am In reference to the 14 year old SRVHS daughter..One case against the two fifteen year olds is that Danville does have a curfew which they obviously broke. Why couldn't these boys star gaze on the front lawn or in the back yard? I feel terrible for this Chronicle delivery person. I agree with Dee who would have thought to watch for children sleeping in the street.

Did they not stop to think that driving over the kids with a second wheel might have caused a little more damage--like death?
A driver should be paying attention to what's in the roadway, even at 3:30 in the morning, but no one would expect to see people sleeping in the street. while the blame must be shared by both the driver and the kids, I think the driver showed remarkable sense in stopping instantly and not making the damage worse than it already was.

Why does the writer (Meghan Neal) think there is oddity associated with stopping after running over an object? Should she have just continued and run over the objects (in this case bodies) with the second axle / set of wheels? Where do they get these writers?
Lastly, where were the parents and why don't they care where their kids sleep? Drug tests for all - including Meghan.

I didn't take it as the writer thought that it was odd that the driver stopped the car after running over the kids. I took it as this whole situation is odd (kids sleeping in the street, kids trapped under a car), not odd why the driver stopped.
I do agree with you about where the parents were and why don't they care where their children sleep-- or if they even knew where they were.
