CHP increasing patrols on Bay Bridge to reduce speeding

The California Highway Patrol and Caltrans are working together to reduce speeds on the Bay Bridge as the structure continues to undergo seismic retrofits, bridge officials said today.

Sensors built into the bridge have determined that westbound motorists typically drive about 10 mph over the speed limit during off-peak hours, according to bridge officials.

The CHP has therefore been increasing patrols on the span.

Officials said two temporary detours on the structure, which are products of the retrofit work, have made it especially important for motorists to obey speed limits on the bridge.

Another detour is scheduled to be put in place in early 2012. Increased CHP patrols will continue throughout August, officials said.

More time wasted protecting us from ourselves when they should be investigating violent and other crimes against actual people.

I am generally opposed to speed trapping for a number of very good reasons Tom, but some of the Bridge work apparently created an uneven zig-zaggy section. There were a number of serious accidents in that spot earlier this year, so I suppose that's why they are watching it closely.

Now staking out stop signs in Danville or Alamo, yep, that's a waste of resources.

Speeding is a violent crime. A fellow high school graduate of my son was in a car on the Bay Bridge several years ago that was rear ended by a speeder. The young man was killed. You can call it an accident but by all measures it was manslaughter.
