Preview the museum's Victory Garden exhibit Thursday night
|
The Museum of the San Ramon Valley's upcoming Victory Garden exhibit will take place from July 27 through Sept. 18. Residents can get a sneak peek with a presentation at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 17 in the Danville Library's Mount Diablo Room.
The San Ramon Valley has a rich agricultural history. In addition to growing hays, grains, fruits and nuts, ranchers and farmers had family gardens. During World War II, they were called Victory Gardens. Women worked collectively to "put up" fruits and vegetables by canning whole produce, jamming, juicing, jellying and making pie fillings. Canning is still practiced today; however the tools of the trade differ.
During Thursday night's presentation, a history gardening specialist will talk about Victory Gardens and a master gardener will share how to create a kitchen garden. They will also demonstrate "canning then and now" and share historic recipes.
