Predawn earthquake shakes up Danville
|
| Some Danville and Alamo residents were shaken awake this morning at 4:42 a.m. by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake centered two miles northeast of Oakland that lasted approximately 10 seconds.
The quake broke windows on stores in Berkeley and may have been responsible for a transformer fire that caused a blackout in the Jack London Square area. According to a KTVU news report, a PG&E spokesman said 1,400 customers lost power in 20 separate outages, mostly near the quake's epicenter. BART trains were halted for 15 minutes for the tracks to be checked.
The earthquake was felt by residents on both sides of the Bay. — Dolores Fox Ciardelli Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by Jordan M. Doronila, a resident of another community, on Jul 20, 2007 at 9:59 am It was pretty scary. I felt my apartment building was going to crumble. Then it stopped. And then I went back to bed. I've experienced a couple of slight earthquakes being California, but this most recent one was the loudest and most felt. It was a shame. I was having such a good night's sleep.
