"Stop, drop and roll," was one message.

"Don't play with matches," was another.

Children in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District used their imaginations and their crayons to create a colorful fire safety message in honor of October being Fire Prevention Month.

The art projects were entries in a coloring contest sponsored by the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the Danville Weekly, now the Danville Express/San Ramon Express. The grand prize for each grade level is a ride to school in a fire truck.

Coloring sheets with a cartoon fire truck and fire hydrant were printed in the Oct. 2 Danville Weekly and were on the Fire District and the newspaper Web sites along with the entry form.

More than 100 entries were received, and on Tuesday, fire board member Roxanne Lindsay, editor Dolores Fox Ciardelli and Fire District information officer Kimberly French gathered at the district offices to go through the drawings one by one and pick a winner from each grade level, K-5. It was a tough decision, said the judges, because all of the entries were imaginative and conveyed the message well.

"I'm glad to see how much fire safety our students are learning," said Lindsay after the judging was completed. "They all are 'getting it.'"

See the photos for the winning entries. The names of the winning students are:

Kindergarten - Kaitlyn Evitt, Neil Armstrong Elementary
First - Victoria Sackl, Montevideo Elementary
Second - Camille Casparian, Walt Disney Elementary
Third - Rohan Puranik, Montevideo Elementary
Fourth - Lani Kwon, John Baldwin Elementary
Fifth - Lauren Frew, Tassajara Hills Elementary

The Fire District is sending certificates of appreciation to all the students who entered the contest.

Very cute! I can't help but be reminded of the children's artwork on this classic bit of Web 1.0:
