More than two dozen firefighters with the San Ramon Fire Protection District have contained a single family house fire in San Ramon.

Fire District spokeswoman Kim French said crews were dispatched to 147 Canyon Lakes Way around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. On arrival, the first engines determined that they had an active fire and pulled a second alarm, bringing more equipment and personnel to the scene.

French said that a resident of the home was there when the fire broke out. The resident escaped the home and then called 9-1-1.

Currently there are six engines, two trucks, an ambulance, a breathing support unit, six chief officers and one fire investigator on site.

Firefighters are dealing with the fire on two fronts: first in containing the fire and working to save the structure; secondly in keeping the fire from spreading to the nearby homes in the neighborhood. That job is made more difficult by the proximity of other structures and the presence of several trees and shrubs in the side yards of the home.

Red flag warnings by the National Weather Service made it possible for more manpower to be available on scene.

According to the NWS, a red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. In cases where there will be low humidity and high winds a watch or warning will be issued.

French said that when a red flag warning comes out, they will have additional crews on call at the station.

No cause of the fire has been determined, as the fire is still being contained. Damage estimates are expected to be issued later, once the fire investigator has an opportunity to go through the home.
