Streetwise: Christmas memories
Mannie and Tom Shaffer, Retired UC Santa Cruz professor and business owner: When I was in the Marines my buddy and I were traveling in a snowstorm near Gastonia, NC, on our way to the Appalachians on Christmas Eve in 1945. We got stuck on a road, and a city policeman offered help. There were no hotel rooms available in town, so he offered us a jail cell to sleep in. It was warm and comfortable. They were very nice and accommodating, and though it was Christmas in jail it was better than being stranded in a car in a snow storm.
